Wasting Time and Changing Minds

Posted by dwallace on March 1, 2011 in poem, Poems |

I’ve never been a poetry kind of guy
It always seemed like a big waste of time.
Sonnets, Haikus, Iambic Pentameter,
A waste of time in endless chatter.

Beatniks, Poets, and Spoken Word
Personally I think it’s all for the birds.
Show me how you can pay your bills rhyming,
and I’ll change my mind in a snap.
Oh wait, there’s always rap!

Hoosier

You don’t have to be from Indiana to be a Hoosier. Just because you live in a trailer, doesn’t make you a loser. You don’t have to have a car up on blocks. No clotheslines of jeans, underwear and socks, Flapping in the wind for all to see. Gun racks in the window are not […]

Army vs. Navy

Posted by dwallace on February 15, 2011 in Uncategorized |

There was a story in the News of the Weird about two drinking buddies. One of the guys was in Army, the other was in the Navy, and they were arguing over which service was better. The Army soldier had a gun and ended up shooting the Navy man. And since the soldier had the […]

Big Waves—Big Ideas

The first time I saw the ocean I fell in love with it instantly. I was in Hawaii because my step-dad had just got stationed there. I would sit on the beach, a light Westerly trade wind blowing in directly in my face, mesmerized as the burnt, rusty-orange sun slipped down from the sky and […]

Billy Tom’s Fingers

Posted by dwallace on February 2, 2011 in Billy Tom's Fingers, Poems |

I had to write a portrait poem, so I wrote one about my Grandpa. I wanted to write one that best represented what I thought about him. Remember, poems don’t have to rhyme. In fact, most, “good poets,” poems don’t rhyme. But sometimes in the writing process, the piece takes on a life of it’s […]

Take your medicine

Posted by dwallace on January 24, 2011 in Take Your Medicine |

Late one summer evening, I along with a dozen other people, was at my friend Jennifer’s house for her 40th birthday party. It a low-key affair and all of us were good friends, except for a few people who we’ve met on other occasions over the years. After several glasses of white wine I excused […]

Poetry Lesson

Posted by dwallace on January 17, 2011 in criminal class press, St. Johnny Walker, The Clean-up Man |

I’m taking a poetry class for my Master in Fine Arts degree. I am not a poetry guy. However, I will be posting some of my poetry because I’m forced to write it for class, therefore you will be forced to read it. (Unless you delete it. Never feel forced to read anything unless it’s […]

Ass+u+me

Posted by dwallace on January 10, 2011 in poem |

I see a guy walk into the gas station with a bionic leg And I say thank you for your service. And he said I got hit by a train. And as I’m flash-frozen there he says Right now your face looks like mine did right before I got hit. And he turns and walks […]

The Path

Posted by dwallace on January 6, 2011 in Creative Writing Assignment |

The gravel parking lot looks like no one’s been there since the day it was built. Tall grass surrounds its outside. As I exit my car, a soft wind blows on my face and the white rocks crunch as I walk toward the dirt trail. A minute in and I’m surrounded by woods on both […]

Last Night (An ode to my Strat)

Posted by dwallace on December 31, 2010 in Last Night, Ode to my Strat, Uncategorized |

You sit in the corner all dirty and dusty. It’s understandable. We partied like rock stars last night. I reach for your black zipper and slowly pull it down to the floor. I grab you by the neck and extract your from your soft black case that keeps you captive. You were so raw and […]
